Pandora Buys Rdio To Become A Global Streaming Powerhouse
I am very glad to see that Pandora – which has been my favorite music recommendation service for at least ten years – is expanding its reach. Maybe it will even be officially available in Germany some day …

Pandora today announced that it was acquiring the assets of now failed subscription service Rdio. While the whispers about Rdio’s future had been building for some time, the deal is more interesting for what it says about Pandora’s plans than what it says about the state of the subscription business.
Rdio Battled Bravely And Set Innovation Standards But Fell Short
For what Rdio lacked in subscriber numbers it made up for in innovation. It continually set product and feature precedents that Spotify and others subsequently aped, and its $75 million dollar ad inventory deal with US radio giant Cumulus sets a business model blueprint that other streaming services will follow. But for all its efforts and extensive marketing efforts Rdio was simply not able to get to the same sort of level as Spotify’s 2nd tier competitors, let alone to seriously challenge Spotify itself. Ahhh, Good Ol‘ Southern Soul & Blues (Internet Radio Tip)
Although I have many stations of various genres in the favorites list of the network music player of my choice (Logitech Squeezebox Boom – review in German) I often listen to the same station for days or weeks whenever I am in my kitchen (where the Squeezebox is located).
These days, my favorite station is Southern Soul Blues Radio. If you are into the same music, the last three songs I just listened to will give you an idea why.

Musik ist eine meiner Hauptpassionen, und eigentlich ist das gute alte Dampfradio weiterhin mein Lieblingsmedium dafür. Allerdings vergällt mir der überall grassierende grässliche Dudelfunk die Freude daran. Deswegen höre ich, wenn ich nicht eigener Musik oder Internet-Radio lauschen kann, in Hamburg tagsüber fast nur noch größtenteils musikfreies Radio – nämlich NDR Info.
Zum Glück gibt es immer noch ein paar Nischen, in denen sich hörenswertes Radio versteckt. Neben den Abend- und Nachtprogrammen von NDR Info ist das von Sonntag um 6 bis Montag um 6 Uhr sowie am Dienstag von Mitternacht bis 6 Uhr auf der Frequenz von Tide (UKW 96,0) das Hamburger Lokalradio.
