Soon to be the Biggest Ever YouTube Channel, T-Series May Also Be About to Reshape Global Culture
India is a problematic market for streaming monetization. It has 1.4 billion consumers but just 330 million of those have smartphones. There were 215 million free streaming users in 2018 but just 1 million paid subscribers despite leading indigenous players like Hungama and Saavn having been in market for years.
Some time over the next month or so a YouTube landmark will be passed: T-Series will pass PewDiePie as the most subscribed YouTube channel on the planet. As of time of writing T-Series had 75.4 million subscribers compared to PewDiePie’s 76.4 million. (PewDiePie’s lead was narrower but he has mobilised his fan base to delay the inevitable.) But do not mistake this milestone to be a narrow measure of the shifting sands of the YouTube economy. Indeed, it tells us more about the future of streaming as a whole (both music and video) than it does the current status of sweary Swedish gamers.
For those of you who somehow do not yet know who T-Seriesis, it is a leading Indian music label and movie studio – it in fact claims to be ‘the biggest – that is the world’s largest YouTube music channel and before long it will likely be able to drop…

R.I.P., Rick Parfitt! Status Quo’s Search for the Fourth Chord is Over
I was sad to hear yesterday that Status Quo’s Rick Parfitt has passed away –
which was confirmed on Quo’s official Facebook page:
This tragic news comes at a time when Rick was hugely looking forward to launching a solo career with an album and autobiography planned for 2017 following his departure from Status Quo’s touring activities on medical advice.
I always had a soft spot in my heart for this British rock and roll institution. And I actually have been listening to lots of their music in the past few weeks because I just discovered their great „Aquostic“ albums which manage to breathe new life into their classics. Stripped down, many of them prove to be just great songs which also work without their standardized simplified boogie rock (see playlist below).

George Clinton reveals why he keeps his mouth shut about new music that pisses him off [Video]
Yesterday in Singapore, Parliament/Funkadelic’s George Clinton aka Dr. Funkenstein met classic rap group The Sugarhill Gang („Rapper’s Delight“). He had a nice two-part Periscope chat with them about the origins of P.Funk and rap, touring together, his musical backgropund and collaborators (including Skip McDonald/Bernard Alexander and Doug Wimbish, members of Sugarhill’s house band, plus Philippé Wynne, Bernie Worrell and Bootsy Collins), and the story behind several of P.Funk’s greatest hits:

Favorite quotes from „House of Cards'“ season 4
Season 4 of „House of Cards“ which premiered on Friday (March 4, 2016) was a little slow to get into, but it picked up steam in the second half – starting with episode 7.
My favorite quotes
Episode 1 (chapter 40)
Francis Underwood: Claire is the First Lady of the United States, and you still think she made the wrong choice.
Elizabeth Hale (Claire’s mother): Reduced to tabloid gossip? She might as well be living in that trailer park you come from.
Francis: Well, it was a peach farm. But you’re right, I am still white trash. I just happen to be white trash that lives in the White House.
The Complete New Funk Times Issue #1 from 1989
The New Funk Times used to accompany George Clinton albums on Capitol Records in the ’80s. From 1989 to 1991, I published it as a subscription-only newsletter. I made the P.Funk History Double Issue available before, here is issue #1 from 1989. It features interviews with George Clinton & Bootsy Collins, and a 250-record P.Funk discography.

The Complete New Funk Times P.Funk History Double Issue 4/5 from 1990
Rolling Stone Magazine has just published the story „Doctor Atomic“ about my favorite funk musician George Clinton (issue #1234, cover date: May 7, 2015). They printed a photo I took during my 1986 home story on George’s Funky Farm and the cover of the P.Funk History Double Issue of the P.Funk newsletter New Funk Times which I used to publish from the late ’80s to early ’90s, with permission of George Clinton.
The NFT website has been hacked quite a while ago and I haven’t had the time yet to bring it back. Therefore I am using my personal blog to post scans of the issue you see in Rolling Stone – with cartoons by Pedro Bell, Overton Loyd and Howard Priestley. Enjoy!

George Clinton & Parliament/Funkadelic on Saturday Night Live (1986)
IMHO, this is one of the best P.Funk performances ever shown on TV:
This video brings back very nice memories:
The Saturday Night Live show took place a few weeks after I did my George Clinton home story (here’s the German version).
