Wer oder was ist REWEs/PENNYs „Crafted-Beer“-Brauer „John Malcom“?

with 26 comments

32 Beers in 2 Days (Looking back at London’s Great British Beer Festival 2016)

with one comment

For the ninth time in a row, I visited the Campaign for Real Ale’s Great British Beer Festival in London last week. Out of over 900 real ales, ciders, perries and international beers I was able to sample 32 real ales and German beers (which I can’t get on tap in Hamburg) during two days.

A quick look at the main hall:

26 Beers in 2 Days (Looking back at London’s Great British Beer Festival 2015)

with one comment

For the eighth time in a row, I just visited the Campaign for Real Ale’s Great British Beer Festival in London again. It is running until tomorrow (Saturday, August 15) at the Olympia. Out of over 900 real ales, ciders, perries and international beers I was able to sample 26 during two days. I did not shoot a video this time because there have not been major changes since last year:

Interesting food (drink) for thought:

  • The dynamics of the beer industry bear remarkable similarity to the recorded music business and there are some lessons that can be learned.
  • Craft beer is like the music industry’s indie sector and vinyl sales rolled into one.
  • The beer aficionado and the music aficionado are more important to their respective industries now than they have ever been and this will only increase.

Music Industry Blog

Over the next few weeks I will be writing a series of posts that illustrate what lessons the music business can heed from other industries. This is the first of these posts. Beer sales have been in steady decline for many years with the big brewers coming to terms with changing consumption habits of consumers and the impact of disruptive new models. Sound familiar? The dynamics of the beer industry bear remarkable similarity to the recorded music business and there are some lessons that can be learned. Beer sales have been declining since 2008 with the core baby boomer consumer base changing consumption habits and drinking more hard liquor and wine. In the UK the amount of beer drunk has fallen by 20% over the last 10 years while US beer sales have been falling since 2008. The number of new breweries went into decline and after years of acquisitions…

Great British Beer Festival 2014

Great British Beer Festival 2014

Since 2008, I have been visiting the Great British Beer Festival in London, a great event organized by the Campaign for Real Ale which was founded in 1971 and has been promoting promoting real ale, real cider and the traditional British pub ever since. According to Wikipedia, it is now the largest single-issue consumer group in the UK.

In this blog entry, I mainly collected my Twitter and Facebook posts (some in German). You can also check out previous reports: 2008’s „Ein halber Tag in London“ (in German) and 2009’s „Drinking for a Good Cause“.

As a first taster, I put together a short video with some festival scenes:

Cockney Pride (Piccadilly): Von schönen Zufällen und der „kleinen Welt“ Internet

with 6 comments

Cockney Pride Piccadilly Circus

Remembering Cockney Pride in London

with 14 comments

Does anyone remember this huge underground pub which used to stretch from Piccadilly Circus/Coventry St. to Jermyn St.?

I got introduced to it by a British photographer from Farnham who worked for my hometown newspaper in Wolfsburg/Germany at the time.

Since then, I returned to Cockney Pride whenever I was in London (and while the pub was still around).
