R.I.P., Teena Marie! (Looking Back at her „Unsung“ Episode)
„She was just a little black girl in a white body!“ This is one of the most concise descriptions of Teena Marie in her episode of the „Unsung“ docu series. TV One is re-running it in the US today (Monday, December 27, 2010) at 9 pm (ET) and midnight.
Here are three short clips from the show:

Today, the Los Angeles Times re-published a Teena Marie interview from 1980. One of the most insightful quotes: >> I don’t get anything negative from blacks and not really anything negative from whites now. But I will say it was different before I started getting some popularity. I don’t think it was prejudice from whites as much as ignorance of something they didn’t know much about. You know, I wish I was colorless sometimes.“ <<
Lenny Kravitz posted a very personal video message: „I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Teena.“
When you’re done watching the Teena Marie instalment of „Unsung“, check out the DeBarge episode by the same writer and producer (Lorna Anozie). She shot a gripping portrait of a dysfunctional family terrorized by an abusive father. (Contrary to fellow Motown act Jackson Five who shared a somewhat similar childhood, DeBarge didn’t just compensate by excelling musically. Some DeBarge brothers also tried to leave their mark in the business of drug trafficking. 😉 )
